Wind Energy
A free and renewable source of energy.
Wind has been harnessed since 250 BC when wind mills were first used for grinding cereal crops and driving water pumps. It was first used to generate electricity in 1888 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA.
Wind generation has made substantial advances in recent years. With the exception of hydro-electric, where the resource has largely been exploited, wind energy has proven to be one of the most cost effective and reliable renewable generation technologies. This is translating into substantial growth with world-wide installed capacity increasing at an annual rate of more than 28% for the last 10 years. Globally, there is currently a total installed capacity of 157,899 MW. (Source: Global Wind Energy Council Feb 2010).
